Drew Newell, a 2006 West High School graduate, earned his associate degree from Modesto Junior College in April. Newell also graduated from Spring Academy, a regional fire training center in Modesto.

Newell was recently hired as a paid reserve firefighter for Escalon Fire Department.

He first started out as an Explorer with the city of Tracy at age 16. After graduating from West High, Newell immediately enrolled at Modesto Junior College to study fire science. He was later hired by the Davis Fire Crew and worked two fire seasons of wildland firefighting with Davis and the Department of Forestry in Plumas National Forest.
