EDITOR,

Stockton astronaut Jose Hernandez has proclaimed that all illegal Mexican immigrants should be given U.S. citizenship.

I wonder if he would feel the same if the shoe were on the other foot? I think not.

Illegal immigrants sneak into our country like thieves in the night and seem to feel that just because they are on American soil that they automatically should be given all the rights and privileges as those of us who were born here.

If they come here and want to become citizens, then it should be done through legal channels by applying for citizenship, taking the classes and learning our language and our customs.

The likes of those like Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, Sen. Dianne Feinstein and others say they are cheap labor. I say hogwash!

There is nothing cheap about taking $25,000 in tax dollars for each one of them for health care.

If Mr. Hernandez really wants to do something, he should strive to correct the one-sided government that exists in Mexico. Strive to eliminate the corruption and graft and make living conditions better in his own country so there would be no need to come here — except to vacation.

Currently, there are two classes of people in Mexico — the very rich and the very poor, and the very rich strive to keep the very poor just that way.

• Editor’s note: Jose Hernandez is a NASA astronaut who was born in French Camp and calls Stockton home. He returned Sept. 11 from a 14-day mission aboard the space shuttle Discovery.

HURRAY MR. JESS! YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT.

Here's a thought! Maybe Mr. Hernandez should take his new-found popularity and money and head over to Mexico to run for government office to clean up the sick corruption going on. If he really cared about his people, why doesn't he go to Mexico and help educate his parents homeland

to get people to stand up to this government.

I TOO AM A YOUNG MEXICAN-AMERICAN. My grandfather ALSO came over illegally. At this point, WHOSE GRANPARENTS DIDN'T COME OVER ILLEGALLY. What is the big deal? NO SPECIAL TREATMENT should be given to any illegal immigrants in this country.

Oh, but right away we are all called "racists" We are called "racists" because we believe that nothing should be handed down without the good old fashioned way of earning it. My Abuelito came here and worked day and night. Nothing was given to him for free.

We know the same old tactics and strategies.. They use the labels of "racist" "close-minded" and blah, blah, blah. But we must be prepared for BHO will most likely try to grant amnesty to all illegals (then he would prove Mr. Joe Wilson to be a liar!)

Enough is enough. The situation is NOT the fault of America. If you are illegal or if your family came from Mexico, Russia, China, India, work hard in America. Don't depend on a government handout. Have decency and find some pride in yourselves in to work and not expect the American Government to go bankrupt taking care of you.
