Ellis swimmers make strong showing at Far Western meet

Liahla Fernandez, 10, of Ellis Aquatics, was the Tracy team’s breakout swimmer this past weekend against international competition at the Pacific Swimming 2014 Speedo Long Course Far Western Championships, held July 30 through Sunday in Concord.

Liahla claimed a second-place finish in 30.68 seconds in the girls 10-and-under 50-meter freestyle. It was one of five events for Liahla, who also finished seventh in the 50 backstroke (37.73).

Other top Ellis swimmers included Emma Magnussen, 12, as she placed fourth in the 11-12 girls 50 butterfly (30.39), fifth in the 100 butterfly (1:08.94) and ninth in the 400 freestyle (5:09.68).

Caitlin O’Neill, 12, placed eighth in the 11-12 girls 100 breaststroke (1:20.82) and ninth in the 200 breaststroke (2:52.67), and Malia Fernandez, 12, placed ninth in the 11-12 girls 100 freestyle (1:04.97).

The 16-member Ellis team, nine girls and seven boys, placed 37th overall out of more than 130 teams, some of which traveled from Mexico and Canada to compete.
