West High School sophomore Gabriella Herrera was one of 10 students in the country selected for the School of Medicine Summer Internship Program at the University of California, San Diego. This highly competitive program required an essay, transcripts, letters of recommendation, PSAT and SAT scores, a portfolio and an interview.

Gabriella interviewed at the UCSD Moores Cancer Center on April 17 and was notified of her selection May 1. Herrera will live in San Diego for six weeks this summer, working 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday in the school of medicine laboratory, and will receive a monetary stipend of $600. At the end of the program she will present her research and laboratory findings.

Herrera intends to pursue a bachelor’s of science degree in neuroscience and attend medical school so that she can become a neurosurgeon.

Tracy resident and University of the Pacific student Dorothy Phan will graduate at 1 p.m. Saturday at Faye Spanos Concert Hall, 3601 Pacific Ave., in Stockton.

Phan is required, as part of the senior engineering class, to design and implement a project. Her group designed and constructed a device that would help calibrate a fractional flow reserve device, a tool used to allow the diagnostic narrowing of blood vessels.

After graduation, Phan plans to pursue a career in veterinary medicine.

Adam Robert Castro and Ian Edward Cabuay Kelly, both of Tracy, graduated from Azusa Pacific University near Los Angeles on May 9. Castro has a bachelor’s degree in business administration and Kelly has a bachelor’s in psychology.
