New to our area? Welcome to Tracy and Mountain House! I know it can be a bit overwhelming to settle into a new town with new faces and new routines. Hopefully, this column will help you as you search for those need-to-know local numbers. Feel free to clip this out and stick it on your fridge. All numbers listed below will have the 209 area code, unless otherwise noted.

Let’s start you off with a big passion of mine — the local animal shelter. The phone number to have handy is 831-6364. Shelter hours are noon to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, and it’s located at 370 Arbor Ave. A brand-new animal shelter is under construction at 2375 Paradise Road and is expected to be completed by the end of 2014.

Do you have a street lamp burned out in your neighborhood? That’s a job for our Public Works Department or Pacific Gas & Electric Co., depending on where it is. Call Public Works at 831-6300 or PG&E at 800-743-5000. Please have the lamp number ready to give them when you call.

If you have a city-owned tree in your front yard that needs trimming, you should call public works to report it, and you can also report broken park sprinkles to this department.

The phone number for the city of Tracy and City Hall is 831-6000. A phone tree prompts callers through different extensions. You can even make water and garbage payments at 831-6800; this is the number for the Finance Department. City Hall is at 333 Civic Center Drive. If you’re looking for a job with the city, call human resources at 831-6150.

When it comes to police services, there are a few numbers to keep handy. The Tracy Police Department is at 1000 Civic Center Drive, and the non-emergency number is 831-4550. There is also a Crime Stoppers 24-hour hotline at 831-4847 and a graffiti hotline at 831-6583.

Tracy Fire Administration is in the historical downtown at 835 Central Ave. and can be reached at 831-6700. The fire department offers several services, such as car seat checks, smoke alarm checks and a water safety program.

The city also provides bus service, called Tracer, which circulates through the Tracy Transit Station at 50 E. Sixth St. The phone number is 831-4BUS (4287).

Tracy Unified School District can be reached at 830-3200. If you have a blocked number, you will need to first dial *82 before dialing the number to unblock it; no private-party calls go through. The new TUSD school year begins Aug. 11.

School starts Aug. 12 for Jefferson Elementary School District (836-3388) and Banta Elementary School District (229-4650) and Aug. 13 for New Jerusalem Elementary School District (830-6363).

In Mountain House, you can reach the Community Services District at 831-2300 or visit 230 S. Sterling Drive. Lammersville Unified School District’s phone number 836-7400, and the district office is at 111 S. De Anza Blvd. School starts Aug. 20.
