The victim was identified Wednesday as Victor Alfonso Ascevedo, 25, of Tracy.
Deputies were called to a field on the 29200 block of Kasson Road near the San Joaquin River Club at about 10:45 a.m. Saturday.
Juan Cristobal Sanchez, 33, was arrested later Saturday and was formally charged with murder and intentional and personal discharge of a firearm during his arraignment Tuesday. Deputy District Attorney Mark Dennings said the D.A.’s office added the firearms charge just before the hearing, but he could not provide additional details on the case because he had been assigned to it that same day.
Sanchez appeared before Judge Franklin Stephenson in Department 35 and was appointed a public defender to oversee his case. Sanchez is scheduled to return to court at 8:30 a.m. next Friday for further arraignment.
Sanchez remains in San Joaquin County Jail in French Camp without bail.
