Tracy Babe Ruth’s hopes for a third consecutive Central California Cal Ripken title will rest on the local league’s 8-and-under All Stars.

The team heads to Bakersfield today to begin the 8-year-old Central California Cal Ripken state tournament, where the champion will advance to the Cal Ripken Pacific Southwest Regional tournament later this month.

“They’re ready to rock and roll and ready to have some fun,” team manager David DeLeon said. He added that while the players had been together only a few weeks, they bonded quickly through practice and at a recent travel ball tournament in Elk Grove.

For the past two years, Tracy Babe Ruth has had teams win their Central California Cal Ripken state titles, including the 9-and-under team in 2013 and the 9-and-under team in 2012, and advance to regional play.

The 8U team is one of five Tracy Babe Ruth all-star teams this year, but none of the other four was able to advance past the District 1 level. There was no District 1 tournament for the 8U teams, so Tracy advanced directly to the state tournament.

Tracy opens against Bullard at 1 p.m. today in the first game of round-robin play and will play Kingsburg on Saturday and Clovis on Sunday to determine who advances to the single-elimination bracket.

Winner of the championship game on Wednesday will advance to the Pacific Southwest Regional Tournament, July 20 to 26 in Long Beach.
