Longtime West High football coach Steve Anastasio will lead the Wolf Pack varsity team for 2014 following the resignation last week of coach Chris Myers.
Anastasio, who has been with Tracy Unified School District since 1988, coached the West sophomore program for 12 years before he took over the head coach job at Kimball High in 2010. He coached the Jaguars varsity team for three years, but when he contract was not renewed for 2013 he went back to West High to coach the sophomore team.
West High athletic director Derek Sprecksel the school’s priority is to keep continuity with the football program, and with Myers’ resignation a month into spring/summer workouts the best choice was to appoint an interim coach from within the program.
Anastasio confirmed on Friday that he will be the interim coach for 2014.
“We’ve already started and this builds on what we’ve already done,” he said.
West has 60 varsity players on the roster for spring/summer workouts, twice as many varsity players as last year. Anastasio noted that nearly all of the juniors played for him on last year’s sophomore team, which went 7-3 overall and 3-2 in the Tri-City Athletic League.
“It’s an easy transition and I’m excited to do it,” he said. He added that he hasn’t decided if he will go for the permanent varsity coaching job, and will focus first on making the 2014 team successful before making that decision.
West’s sophomore coach will be Dante Dell’Arringa, who was an assistant sophomore coach last year, and David Luera will return for his second year as freshman coach.
