Ivan Terriquez will be a senior at West High in the fall, but he has goals well beyond the 2014 football season as he builds on his craft.

Terriquez, the Wolf Pack’s kicker and punter, earned an invitation to Kohl’s National Invitational Scholarship Camp on July 19 and 20 in Wales, Wisc.

The camp, run by former Iowa State kicker Jamie Kohl, will collect together about 500 high school kickers and punters from around the U.S. Terriquez was invited after Kohl ran a camp in San Jose on April 12.

“I had to perform well and make sure the coach noticed me,” Terriquez said. “(Kohl) trains NFL kickers and punters. He trains the punter for the Raiders, Marquette King, so for me to get noticed by him is pretty good.”

Terriquez said that he made field goal kicks of 50-plus yards during the San Jose camp, and at the end, he was rated in the top three out of 18 punters and kickers.

Camp results show that Terriquez averaged 62 yards on his kickoffs, with a 3.49-second hang time, and 42.33 yards on his punts, with a 3.48-second hang time.

Kohl’s organization also selects the punters and kickers for the Under Armour All-America Game and the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl, both held in January.

Terriquez grew up on the soccer field, but in his freshman year at West, coaches saw that his talents translated well to the football field. He was the Wolf Pack’s varsity punter and kicker in 2013 and expects to have a good senior year as he seeks out scholarship opportunities.

“I enjoy going out there and playing in front of the people and the fans and actually putting points on the board for the team,” he said.

Now that he’s received his invitation to the national camp, Terriquez is raising money to pay for the camp fee and a plane ticket. Until June 25, Buffalo Wild Wings, 2796 Naglee Rd., will make a donation with every meal order if the customer mentions Terriquez and the national camp.
