Baseball: Oki, Atwal top all-league lists

Two local baseball players topped their respective all league lists as most valuable players for the 2014 season.

Tracy High senior Braeden Oki, the Bulldogs’ center fielder and leadoff batter, is the San Joaquin Athletic Association MVP after he and the Bulldogs won the SJAA title and finished the season among the top four teams in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I South.

Oki led the Bulldog offense with a .526 batting average over 30 games. He also led the team in base hits (51) and was the SJAA leader in stolen bases (21).

The SJAA also picked Tracy High coach Vic Alkire as coach of the year after he led the Bulldogs to a third consecutive league title with a 22-9 record, 12-3 in the SJAA. Alkire also logged his 300th win as Tracy High’s head coach, finishing his 21st season as Bulldog coach with a 331-224 record.

Millennium High senior pitcher and catcher Manjot Atwal is the Central California Athletic Alliance MVP. He and the Falcons went undefeated in the CCAA to win the league title. Atwal was the Falcons’ starting pitcher in 13 of his 25 games and finished with a 10-2 record and a 2.52 earned run average. He threw five shutouts, including two no-hitters, and led the CCAA in strikeouts with 88 in 77 2/3 innings. He also batted .488, with 42 base hits, and led the CCAA in runs batted in (40).
