The Tracy Tritons swim club dove into its 2014 season Saturday, hosting the 45th annual Tracy Tritons Invitational, the first meet of the year for the Mid Valley Swim League.

The two-day event at Pinkie Phillips Aquatics Center, named for the late Tritons founder, filled the pool area at West High School with swimmers, coaches and race officials and filled the parking lot with families and supporters.

According to the Tritons president, Molly Lowe, the meet isn’t just the largest event for the local team. It’s the largest of the MVSL season, which runs through July.

The total participant count for the meet was 692 swimmers from five teams. The Turlock Seadogs scored the highest with 1,095 points, followed by the Ripon Sea Lions (1,068), Tracy Tritons (916), Ceres Dolphins (798) and Manteca Dolphins (494).

“This is our biggest fundraiser for our team,” Lowe said, adding that entry fees from the meet would pay the Tritons’ bills for the summer — a total of more than $12,000 to rent the West, Kimball and Tracy high school pools for meets and practices throughout June and July. “In order for us to financially stay afloat, we need to be able to host a meet of this size, because the pool rental fees in Tracy are extremely expensive.”

For swimmers, the meet builds prestige for their home club.

“I feel kind of honored, because this is the biggest meet of the season and it’s the only two-day meet in the whole season,” said Alec Fairfield, 17, who swims for the Tritons and coaches the younger children. “It makes me feel like I’m part of something big.”

Sandra Walther, 17, was one of the Tritons’ top competitors at the meet, winning the 17-18 girls 100-yard freestyle (59.34 seconds) and 50 freestyle (26.57).

“It’s always a fun meet. I always love to be able to swim everything and see how I measure up,” Walther said. “I use it to see where I will compete for the rest of the season.”

Walther, who graduated from Millennium High on Friday and is headed to U.C. Davis in the fall, was one of two recipients of a $250 Pinkie Phillips Memorial Scholarship. Tritons swimmer Rebekah Watson also received a scholarship honoring Phillips.

Another of the Tritons’ leading competitors at the weekend meet was Lela Ziller, 8, who won the 7-8 girls 25-yard butterfly (18.44), 25 backstroke (19.76) and 25 breaststroke (22.48). Other first-place swimmers were Brice Forgy, 6, in the 6-and-under boys 25 freestyle (26.56); Clara Ho, 13, in the 13-14 girls 100 freestyle (1:00.72) and 50 freestyle (27.54); and Emil Soler-My, 17, in the 17-18 boys 100 individual medley (1:01.64).

The Tritons also won the 6-and-under mixed 100 freestyle relay (1:55.77), the 7-8 girls 100 medley relay (1:29.29) and 100 freestyle relay (1:12.02), the 13-14 girls 200 freestyle relay (1:54.77) and the 15-18 girls 200 medley relay (2:11.27).
