The Press Editorial Board interviewed Mousalimas and Dr. Jeff Tilton about their goals and credentials for the position. The third candidate, Michael Gillespie, declined to be interviewed.
Mousalimas came to Tracy Unified in 1998 after working as a Peace Corps volunteer, math teacher and principal. He worked in Tracy for a decade until his last position as assistant superintendent of human resources.
We looked very carefully at not only the experience of the candidates but also the time spent in each job. That longevity Mousalimas had in various positions and his succession of jobs with more and more responsibility stood out. These factors denote Mousalimas’ commitment to local education and deep familiarity with the issues particular to Tracy and Tracy families.
We also feel the relationships he has developed with county agencies, businesses and school districts will best serve our children.
The county office of education is charged with helping local school districts implement two major initiatives this year: new Common Core teaching and testing standards and the Local Control Funding Formula — which will funnel state education funding through county superintendents, who will then distribute money to local districts.
Because of his experience at the county for the past six years — five as assistant superintendent of county-operated schools and programs and the past year as deputy superintendent for student programs and services — Mousalimas is in the best position to understand the intricacies of those changes.
Mousalimas has also received the endorsement of 12 of the 14 district superintendents in San Joaquin County, including Dr. James Bridges with Jefferson Elementary School District, Dr. Kirk Nicholas with Lammersville Unified School District and Dr. James Franco with Tracy Unified.
James Mousalimas’ experience, longevity and increasing responsibility in previous positions and relationships countywide lead the Press Editorial Board to endorse him in the June 3 election.
