Tesla Motors, founded in 2003 and headquartered in Palo Alto, manufactures all-electric vehicles and has 2,000 employees, according to the company website.
Mike Ammann said the property Tesla Motors has leased is at 18260 Harlan Road, part of the Crossroads Commerce Center in Lathrop.
Ammann said he believes facility will be a manufacturing plant noting 35 manufacturing job positions for Lathrop already listed on the Tesla Motors website.
“The production facility will be very modern,” Ammann said.
A Tesla Motors job description for a robotics and controls CNC engineer for the Lathrop facility described it as a “CNC Machining factory.” Other job positions listed for Lathrop include CNC equipment technician, CNC programmer, CNC supervisor, IT manufacturing support, machining set up technician, and mechanical engineer/machinist.
Ammann said he expects the Lathrop facility will probably employ about 125 employees at the start and could have up to 500 at the full build out.
Locating the facility in San Joaquin County shows that high-tech is moving toward San Joaquin County.
“The story is the location of Amazon with 1,000 robots, and now Tesla with their automated manufacturing and the Google barge arriving in Stockton —there’s three big names out of the Silicon Valley that have come our way in the last year or so,” Ammann said. “Silicon Valley has begun finding out who we are and they like us.”
Lathrop Mayor Sonny Dhaliwal called his city a prime location and low-cost alternative for growing Bay Area companies.
“I am honored and overjoyed that Tesla has chosen Lathrop for its expanding high-tech manufacturing operations,” Dhaliwal said. “The new Tesla facility will provide employment in the region for years to come.”
The president and CEO of the San Joaquin Partnership, Mike Ammann, said the region had been home to more than 11 first-tier auto parts suppliers for the New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. plant in Fremont before it closed in 2010. Currently the plant is being used to assemble Tesla Motor cars Ammann said..
Ammann said the closure left a skilled auto industry workforce and manufacturing facilities suitable for Tesla’s use.
According to public records referenced in the release, there is no time frame for when the Tesla plant will open.
