Five athletes from Wais Martial Arts of Tracy have recently qualified for the USA Taekwondo National Championships, and eight more have a chance to qualify this weekend.
Among the qualifiers for the national tournament are black belts Gion Hakimi, 18, and Leon Hakimi, 16, who both won bronze medals in the sparring competition at the Nevada State Championships on March 1 in Las Vegas.
Nadia Resendiz, 8, also a black belt, won a gold medal for sparring and won bronze in both board breaking and forms.
Qualifying in the blue belt division were Darrell Cenido, 7, who won gold in board breaking and silver in sparring, and Ehtan Karhikeyan, 7, who won silver in both sparring and forms.
This weekend, Sonann Hakimi, 12, Favian Velasquez, 11, Andrew Rozales, 7, and Ace Rozales, 5, will compete in sparring at the California State Taekwondo Championships in Fresno. Hakimi will compete in the black belt division and the younger athletes in the colored belt divisions. Ceniya Ernestine, Faith Marie and Kala Sashank, all 8, and Kala Manasvini, 9, will compete in forms.
The national championships will be held July 1 to 7 in San Jose.
