The Kimball High swim teams held their place atop the Valley Oak League standings with a wins for both the varsity boys and girls in a home dual meet against Sierra High on Friday.

The Jaguars (6-0 VOL) have two meets left, including a road trip to Ripon on Thursday, April 17.

“Ripon will be tough,” Kimball coach Justine Webb said after Friday’s meet, adding that it could be the meet that determines the league championship.

Wins over Sierra, by a score 99-71 for both the boys and girls varsity teams, represent one of the main challenges for the Jaguars.

“As long as I’ve been here we’ve always lost to Sierra,” senior Josh Wagstaff said. “Today we came in, we didn’t know what was going to happen, we swam hard and it paid off in the end.”

Kimball’s boys placed first in six of the 11 events, including the 400-yard freestyle relay, where Wagstaff, juniors Seth Suzuki and Brandon Nusser, and senior Daniel Russell Cheung qualified for the May 15 Sac-Joaquin Section meet with a time of 3 minutes, 39.17 seconds. Suzuki also logged a section-qualifying time of 56.83 in the 100 butterfly.

Kimball’s girls placed first in eight of the 11 events. Top swimmer was freshman Kamryn Lucero, with section-qualifying times in both the 50 freestyle (26.20) and 100 butterfly (1:03.72). She and teammates sophomore Gaby Perez Del Rio and freshmen Scarlett Green and Sasha Betts also set section-qualifying times in both the 200 medley relay (2:03.18) and 400 freestyle relay (4:02.59).
