Kimball varsity teams beat Sonora, split with Sierra

Kimball High’s track and field team hosted Sierra and Sonora high schools in Valley Oak League competiton. The varsity teams each beat Sonora, while the girls beat Sierra by a narrow margin and the boys lost to Sierra, putting the girls team at 2-1 in the VOL and the boys at 1-2 in the VOL. The freshman-sophomore boys beat both opponents to stand at 3-0 in the VOL, and the frosh-soph girls beat Sonora and lost to Sierra to stand at 2-1.

Sophomore Julie Price was the top athlete as Kimball’s varsity girls beat Sonora 84-25 and lost to Sierra 59-56. Price was the overall winner of the 100 (12.59), 200 (26.78) and high jump (4-4), and senior Francesca Loayza won the 1600 (5:21.20) and the 3200 (12:08.85) against both opponents. Kimball’s 4x100 relay team (51.24) also beat both Sierra and Sonora.

For the varsity boys Kimball senior Damon Jackson was the only Jaguar athlete to place first against both teams. Jackson won both the 100 meter dash (10.62 seconds) and the 200 meters (22.02). Also taking first overall was the Kimball 4x100 relay team (43.61).

West frosh-soph boys place first at Castro Valley

West High’s freshman-sophomore boys track and field team has brought home another first-place trophy, winning the Castro Valley Invitational on Friday at Castro Valley High School.

The Wolf Pack finished with a team score of 135 points, ahead of nine other teams, with Northgate High of Walnut Creek in second (88). It’s the fourth meet the West freshman-sophomore boys have won this year.

West’s relay team of Dion Collier, Justin Velasco, Christian Velasco and Matthew Roe, all sophomores, won both the 4x100-meter relay (45 seconds flat) and the 800-meter sprint medley relay (1 minute, 40.25 seconds).

Collier also won the 100-meter dash (11.38), and Christian Velasco won the triple jump (42 feet, 3 inches).

The relay team of Simon Franco and Steele Langland, sophomores, and Andrew Enriquez and Zayed Zaman, freshmen, won the 4x800 relay (9:05.66) for West, and the team of Paul Payumo, Anthony Rhoads and Isaac Soria, all sophomores, and freshman Emmanuel Turner won the 4x65 shuttle hurdle relay (44.48).

Zaman also won the 1,600 (4:54.17) and tied for first with Rhoads in the high jump (5-8). Sophomore Emran Kazem won the shot put (46-6).

West’s frosh-soph girls also competed. With just six girls, the Wolf Pack placed fourth (56) out of 11 teams. Northgate (88) placed first.

Freshman Morgan Brown and sophomores Alexis Lockard, Herbie Jo DelaCruz, and Tatyana Nealy won the 800-meter sprint medley relay (1:54.57), and sophomore Ivie Eboigbodin won the long jump (15-10.75).

West’s varsity teams did not compete at this event.
