The West tennis team claimed an early season win over Tracy High on Thursday in a pre-league crosstown match.

West won it 6-3, with the Wolf Pack winning five of the six singles matches and one of three doubles matches.

West No. 1 singles player Jahan Viejh, who beat Tracy senion Andrew Canlas 6-4, 6-1, said he’s been training during the rest of the year and expects the 2014 season will be the best yet for West, which won the Tri-City Athletic League title in 2013.

“We have a lot of people who came back from last year,” Viejh said. “It’s pretty much the same lineup, so hopefully we can repeat as champions.”

West senior Peter Creasman added that a more mature team, plus camaraderie among players, will make it better season.

“We’re a pretty good family,” he said. “We’re working together and we know our stuff.”

Tracy’s No. 2 player, sophomore Josh Boehm, was the Bulldogs only singles player to win his match on Thursday, beating Creasman 1-6, 7-5, 6-1. Boehm said it was just a matter of controlling the tempo, and knew he could beat Creasman with a slower-paced game.

He said that in spite of a couple losses, including a loss on March 10 to SJAA opponent Lodi, the team is improving.

“We put up a pretty good match,” he said. “We have a really strong ladder and everybody is right where they’re supposed to be.”

Tracy coach Patrick O’Brien added that the will be strong once a couple injured players, including top singles player, senior Derek Paris, come back for league contests.

“They definitely will continue to get better, because they do like to go out and work,” O’Brien said.
