Wrestling: Locals end season on first day of CIF tournament

Three local wrestlers finished their season on the first day of the California Interscholastic Federation state championship tournament in Bakersfield on Friday.

Kimball High teammates, senior Trent Nicholson and junior Reese Chew, each went 2-2 for the tournament and were eliminated two matches short of the medal rounds.

Nicholson, wrestling in the 152-pound class, won his first match with a pin in one minute, 15 seconds, lost on a 21-6 technical fall, won with a pin in 57 seconds and was eliminated on a pin in 4:29.

Chew (138) won a 7-3 decision, lost on a pin in 2:47, won a 5-4 decision and lost on a pin in 2:50.

West High freshman Greg Viloria (106) was eliminated with two decisions, including 5-2 loss and a 4-2 loss.

Top team was Clovis High with a score of 197.5. Clovis had eight wrestlers finish in the top eight, including two gold medalists.
