Track and field athletes at Tracy’s All City Meet on Wednesday jumped at the opportunity to show crosstown rivals what they’re made of.
The teams from Tracy, West and Kimball high schools competed in the first track and field meet in the new Wayne Schneider Stadium. West outscored Tracy and Kimball in all four divisions.
West High sophomore Christian Velasco, winner of the varsity boys triple jump with a mark of 40 feet even, said he and his teammates were dedicated to the principles of “hard work, dedication and integrity.”
“We’re starting pretty good. Everyone is coming to practice and we’ve executed,” he said. “If we just keep doing our jobs, the season will go great.”
West won the varsity boys division with 63 points, just ahead of Tracy, 57, and Kimball, 49. West’s varsity girls scored 67 points to beat Kimball, 59, and Tracy, 30. West’s freshman-sophomore boys scored 76 and prevailed over Kimball, 43, and Tracy, 40, and West’s freshman-sophomore girls (104) dominated both Tracy, 25, and Kimball, 19.
West junior Elias Rodriguez, winner of the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 42 seconds flat, said he had a couple of missteps in his event, but the early part of the season is the time to work those out.
“I think my season will be really good, but also my team,” he said. “We work really hard every day for as long as we can. We try to go and dominate everywhere.”
A crosstown meet is also an opportunity for the competitive nature of track and field athletes takes the spotlight.
Tracy High junior Nate Jones, anchor of Tracy’s 4x400-meter relay team, the final event of the day, said that even though he knew his team trailed behind West, he was still determined for the team to finish the day with a win.
“When I got the baton, I was full of energy. Something about the city meet just touches me in my heart and makes me give 110 percent every time,” Jones said.
Tracy won the event with a time of 3 minutes, 36.07 seconds.
Meets early in the season give coaches an idea of how the season will shape up. West head coach T.J. Williams said that this year’s Wolf Pack team is relatively young, but the athletes have developed quickly.
“You teach them the fundamentals and the proper technique, and you empower and motivate the kids and get them to believe in the program, it will build itself,” he said. “We’re young, but we’re not going to back down from anybody.”
Among the West athletes winning multiple varsity events was sophomore Ivie Eboigbodin, who was first in the girls 100 hurdles (16.22), 100 (13.07) and 300 hurdles (49.33).
“I felt happy about it and now I’ll work harder, work on my form,” she said. “I see my team going far, because we have a lot of potential and a lot of talent.”
Kimball coach Ben Trombley said saw sprints and hurdles as his team’s strengths. Kimball senior Damon Jackson won both the 100 (11.04) and 200 (22.11) and anchored the first-place 4x100 relay team (43.07).
“I’ve run against a lot of fast people and I’m making goals for myself,” Jackson said. “My 4x100 team, once we get our handoffs down, we’ll be good.”
Tracy proved strong in distance events.
Junior Kaitlin Spencer won the varsity girls 1,600 meters (5:37.63) and 3,200 (12:26.48) and 800 (time n/a).
She said that the Bulldog athletes were happy to have their home venue back this year after having their only home meet of 2013 at Kimball High while the stadium was under construction.
“I feel like it’s part of home,” Spencer said “It’s a nice facility. I’m really grateful that we have that.”
Tracy coach Jay Fishburn has five more meets on the team’s calendar this season, including the March 29 Alumni Meet, originally scheduled March 1 but postponed because of rain.
Fishburn added that he hoped to host the San Joaquin Athletic Association championship meet in 2015 and also expand the All City Meet.
“Hopefully next time we do it, we’ll be in a position where every kid can compete,” he said. “Next year, I’d like to be in a position where, with the nine-lane track, we can add Millennium and Delta Charter as well.”
