Navy recruit completes basic training

U.S. Navy Fireman Recruit Samuel L. Brown, a 2013 graduate of West High School, recently completed basic training at the Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill.

The eight-week program included training in naval customs, first aid, firefighting, safety and survival, concluding in a Battle Stations exercise emphasizing sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance.

Brown is the son of Latoya Parker of Manteca.

Air Force reservist graduates from training

U.S. Air Force Reserve Airman Karina Y. Hernandez graduated recently from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in San Antonio, Texas.

Hernandez is a 2008 graduate of Tracy High School and earned an associate degree in 2012 from Las Positas College in Livermore.

Her training included military discipline, Air Force core values, fitness and basic warfare principles and skills.

She is the daughter of Cristina Barrera of Tracy.
