Two Kimball High wrestlers finished at the top of their brackets at the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV tournament on Saturday, and will be among seven wrestlers advancing to the SJS Masters meeting on Friday, Feb. 28, and Saturday, March 1, at Stockton Arena.
Kimball senior Trent Nicholson, wrestling in the 152-pound class, won his third consecutive Division IV title on Saturday at Vista Del Lago High in Folsom. Nicholson won three matches in a row in his bracket, including two first-period pins and an 8-6 decision in the championship match.
His teammate, junior Reese Chew (138), won three matches, including a 13-4 major decision, a 14-7 decision, and then an 11-5 decision in the championship match.
Seven more Kimball wrestlers competed. Three wrestlers, including sophomore Kainoa Caspillo (106), senior Michael Stephens (132) and senior Matt Cooper (220) placed fifth, but do not advance to the Masters meet, which takes only the top four in each class from Division IV.
West High will send four wrestlers to the Masters meet after they placed in the top eight in their respective classes at the SJS Division I-AA tournament at Johansen High in Modesto on Saturday. Top West wrestler was freshman Greg Viloria, who placed third in the 106-pound class. West senior Angel Castillo (120) placed sixth, senior Antonio Orosco (145) placed sixth, and senior Carlos Vasquez (132) placed seventh. Five other West wrestlers competed but did not advance.
Also heading to the Masters meet is Tracy High senior Alex Warner, who placed second in the 285-pound bracket at the Division I-A tournament at Franklin High in Elk Grove on Saturday. Nine other Tracy wrestlers were eliminated in the early rounds.
