Morelos called a news conference at 2 p.m. on Mount Diablo Avenue at the intersection with West Street in Southside Tracy. He said he was concerned that the growth of the community was leaving some neighborhoods behind.
“Why am I here in this area? This is a good example of what we face in regards to growth,” Morelos said. “Over the years, there have been Capital Improvement Projects that have gone out. None have come out here to this area.”
The Tracy native said similar situations exist the neighborhoods in downtown and Cabrillo Park, in addition to Southside.
“There some things that are going really good for Tracy right now. The annexing of Cordes Ranch. Gateway. Bringing in Amazon. Those are very good things that are bringing in jobs to the city of Tracy and sets up Tracy to become the extension of the Silicon Valley,” he said.
“I wanted to be involved in making sure the city of Tracy goes in the right direction.”
Mayor Pro Tem Michael Maciel announced his campaign for mayor July 22, and Morelos identified one difference between him and Maciel.
“I feel I’m more approachable,” he said. “I know a lot of people here. They know me.”
According to city clerk Sandra Edwards, candidates must file official papers to run between July 14 and Aug. 8. The election to select a new mayor is Nov. 4.
