Classic gymnasts shine in first competition of 2014

Classic Gymnastics of Tracy opened its 2014 USA Gymnastics season with meets across Northern California for its boys, optional girls and Xcel teams. 

The Xcel teams are designed so that all skill levels can compete, while the optional girls are in advanced competition.

Flips Invitational

Classic’s girls Xcel teams won in three divisions and collected 16 gold medals at the Flips Invitational from Friday, Jan. 10, to Sunday, Jan. 12, in Reno.

Carrie Weiss, 9, led the bronze older age group team to a win over Flips USA Gymnastics by a team score of 111.6-105.175. Weiss’ first-place all-around score (37.45) included wins in vault (9.3) and balance beam (9.5). Amber Musskopf, 12, was second all-around (37.4) with first-place finishes on uneven bars (9.45) and floor exercise (9.55).

Sarah Dorn, 8, led the bronze younger age group team to a 110.075-106.5 win over Dream Xtreme of Vacaville. Her first place all-around score (37.2) included top marks in vault (8.6), uneven bars (9.4), balance beam (9.6) and floor exercise (9.6).

Classic beat Flips USA Gymnastics 110.125-106.525 in the silver older age group. Elianna Murray, 11, was second all-around (37.075) and logged first-place scores in uneven bars (9.225) and floor exercise (9.55). Astri Pulliam, 11, was third all-around (36.825), with a first-place mark in vault (9.2). Also winning a gold medal was Keelin O’Leary, 11, who was the top performer in the silver younger division floor exercise (9.575)

Classic placed second of three teams in the gold all-ages competition with a score of 106.925. Sarah Sailors, 14, was second all-around (36.475) and won a gold medal on vault (9.3), and Shelby Hurd, 16, was fifth all-around (35.25) and took gold on uneven bars (9.025).

Golden State Classic

The girls optional team logged a team win and collected seven gold medals at the Golden State Classic in Rancho Cordova on Saturday, Jan. 11, and Sunday, Jan. 12.

Classic beat Liberty Gymnastics of Concord 109.375-101.225 in the Level 8 all-ages team competition. Erika Pulliam, 14, placed first all-around in the older division (37.05), with first-place marks on vault (9.450) and balance beam (9.075). Katelyn Garay, 14, placed third all-around (36.75) and had a first-place score on uneven bars.

Other gold medalists included Romi Tsang, 11, first all-around (37.075) in the Level 7 younger division with a first-place mark on balance beam (9.375). Classic’s Level 7 team placed fifth of eight teams with a score of 109.275. Kaiya Panomvana, 9, won the gold medal in the Level 6 younger uneven bars (9.250).

Oroville Invitational

The boys from Classic Gymnastics placed second of seven teams and brought home three gold medals from the Level 6 competition at the Oroville Invitational on Saturday and Sunday. Their team score was 178.4.

Colin Flores, 9, placed first all-around with a score of 61.2, including first-place marks in floor exercise (9.6) and high bar (10.8). Tyler Flores, 9, was second all-around (59.3) and had the highest score on pommel horse (11.0).

Classic’s boys placed ninth of 11 teams in the Level 5 competition (154.2) and 10th of 10 teams in Level 4 (146.3).
