Gunner James Fernandez made an early arrival to become the first baby born in 2014 at Sutter Tracy Community Hospital.

Gunner’s parents, Nicole and Tony Fernandez of Manteca, were visiting West Valley Mall when Nicole’s water broke. Nicole said Gunner’s delivery date was originally expected to be Friday, Jan. 3.

Instead, Gunner arrived at 7:32 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 1, weighing 6 pounds, 10 ounces and measuring 19 inches long.

Sleeping in his parents’ arms on Thursday, Jan. 2, the newborn took a break from the crowd of relatives and friends who have visited the family.

Nicole was in labor for 16 hours before giving birth to the couple’s first child. Both 27, they have married for a year.

“It’s been awesome. He’s a good baby, not fussy at all,” Nicole said as she sat with her son in the Sutter Tracy maternity room with her husband and parents, Dennis and Cindy Piper.
