A couple of veterans’ stories touched my heart this year, including the story of Bill Keller, a World War II veteran, who greeted motorists and pedestrians with an infectious smile and larger-than-life wave at the corner of West Schulte Road and Sycamore Parkway for three weeks in October. Keller, a resident of Paradise who visits his son in Tracy, was back at his post in December, spreading seasonal cheer.
Also in October, local veteran Richard W. Bandy Jr., who needed a liver transplant, became the beneficiary of some inspiring community support. A fundraiser at West Valley Family Bowl yielded more than $6,200 for medical expenses. I found out that Bandy had his transplant and was home in time for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
This year, our community pulled together around a local family with many needs. Susan Tanupo, a wheelchair user with a special-needs daughter and a hospitalized husband fighting cancer and Valley fever, was facing possible homelessness. Community members helped the family move, and two weeks before Christmas, Susan’s husband Isaako was released from the hospital. He spent Christmas at home with his family.
