Last October, Michael Scott and Debbie Phillips, the brother and aunt of Rachel Scott, who was murdered at Columbine, came to town and shared the tragedy of her story. Rachel was an innocent girl who became the victim of the rage of Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, who killed her and 12 others.
Harris and Klebold were victims of bullying by classmates and took out their displaced anger against 36 others they killed or injured before killing themselves. One of the boys said this might have been avoided if only someone had been kind to them.
I bring this up, not to excuse the cold-blooded killing that these young men perpetrated, but to recognize that we live in a fallen world where sin begets sin. The harm that is done by us has ramifications that may go on for years, decades and beyond.
Melissa Huckaby, who deserves her day in court for this horrific crime and will have to pay if she’s found guilty, may have had her own terrible experiences, including rape and abuse. If she was raped by a cop, then he is morally culpable to an extent for what happened to Sandra Cantu.
My heart goes out to the Cantus, the Huckaby family and all those who have suffered. May we all learn to respect and love each other, as we are created in the image of God.
Scott Hurban, Tracy
