West High freshman wrestler Greg Viloria lengthened his early-season winning streak with a series of pins Saturday, Dec. 14, at the Bay Area Invitational tournament at Castro Valley High School.

Viloria, wrestling in the 106-pound weight class, won with three pins, including a pin in 1 minute, 26 seconds in the championship match against Jordan Haynie of Dublin High.

It was Viloria’s 10th win of the season, with no losses, in his first season as a high school wrestler.

Viloria said his 10 years of experience in youth wrestling have helped him , but he’s still winning more matches than he expected.

“I didn’t expect it to go this way,” he said. “It will be a lot tougher later in the season.”

His performance contributed to West’s fourth-place finish out of 29 teams at the event, with a team score of 113 points, behind first-place Freedom High (173) of Oakley, second-place Granada High (135) of Livermore and third-place Dublin High (125) of Dublin. Tracy High also was represented and placed 14th (71).

Viloria said the Bay Area Invitational was a good chance for his team to face top competition in Northern California.

“We looked pretty good. We almost got a trophy,” he said. “We can fix those mistakes, and we’ll end up doing better next time.

Medals went to the top five wrestlers in each weight class, including Tracy junior Tomas Landeros (152), who placed second after three first-period pins and a loss to Granada senior Angel Beltran on a 20-5 technical fall in the final.

West junior George Rivas (113) also placed second, with three wins by decision and a 8-7 loss by decision in the final to Franklin Avelino, a senior at Jesse Bethel High in Vallejo.

Other local medalists were Tracy senior Dalton Gualco (120), fourth place; Tracy junior Noah Blackwell (160), fourth place; and West senior Ron Sasing (113), fifth place.

West seniors Carlos Vasquez (132) and Bob Lopez (285); juniors Patrick McDonald (152) and Adrian Zepeda (195); and sophomore Isaiah Juan (145) all advanced to the medal rounds, contributing to the Wolf Pack’s team score, but finished in sixth place.

Defending San Joaquin Athletic Association champion Lodi High beat West in a pre-league dual match Dec. 11 at Lodi High.
