The Bulldog golfers took first place in the team scores at the Tracy/West Invitational at Tracy Golf and Country Club Monday. That included top-six scores from Anthony Manguray, Jake Pineo and Kirk Leopoldo. The Bulldogs recorded a team score of 390, 11 strokes less than second-place St. Mary’s, 401.
The Ram’s Beau Zastrow had the top score of the day, a two-under-par 70. Tracy’s Manguray was second with 71 and Pineo and Bobby Park of Los Banos tied for third with 72. Leopoldo was fifth with 76 and West High’s Phil Kim was sixth with a score of 77.
Manguray said it was a good round in a season where he has been shooting well enough to stay in the low 70s most of the time. Monday’s round was pars all day, with one birdie.
Leopoldo said the time was right for him to play a tournament on the home course. His 76 was his best round this year.
“We know where to hit the ball, where not to hit the ball, how all the greens are,” he said. “We know all the ins and outs of the course. That’s definitely a big advantage.”
West’s Phil Kim said all of the golfers had an additional challenge with the sudden hot weather.
“I think overall we did well,” he said, adding that he started off with a 43 on the front nine but came back with a two-under 34 on the back nine.
“Overall I was proud of how I finished the round and continued to improve my game,” he said.
The final team score has no bearing on league standings, which will determine who has the advantage going into the league tournaments next week. But the Bulldogs on Monday showed that they can outscore their league rivals from Lincoln High.
Tracy plays for the San Joaquin Athletic Association title on Monday, April 27, at Micke Grove Golf Course, and West plays in the Tri-City Athletic League tournament at Creekside Golf Course in Modesto.
Other Tracy scores included: Zack Jackson 87, Corey Devlin 84, and Brian Mantor 94. West’s other scores were: Brett Steele 87, Brandon Vergel de Dios 90, Allen Silveira 96, Dane DeJesus 93, and Edward Sembrano 95.
Team scores were: Tracy 390, St. Mary’s 401, Kelseyville 407, Lincoln 415, Bret Harte 419, Granada 421, Escalon 421, Ripon Christian 438, West 442, Red Bluff 467, Los Banos 467, McNair 514, Buhach Colony 557, Millennium 593, and Riverbank had only four golfers and did not post a team score.
