According to General Manager Jan McClintock, the agreement will save the district tens of thousands of dollars a year by exchanging the $150,000 rental cost of the public library at 579 Wicklund Crossing, owned by Trimark Communities LLC, for a $12,000 lease of the temporary site offered by Shea on Main Street.
The board agreed to allow McClintock to enter into a five-year lease with Shea that would commence Jan. 7 and not exceed $60,000 in total rental costs.
McClintock told the board the five-year plan would allow Shea to construct a permanent library in the downtown center that is being designed.
Once the design of the new town center is completed and sent to San Joaquin County officials for approval, the MHCSD staff is expected to begin designing a permanent library and recreational center with Shea staff, she said. This project is expected to get underway by the summer of 2014.
The temporary library is slated to open in late February in a modular building that is about 96 feet by 60 feet.
Although the Wicklund Crossing library building has to be vacated by Feb. 6, McClintock said officials plan to move all of its contents out by the third or fourth week of January. There will be a gap when the library will not be accessible until all of the materials are relocated.
She said Shea has already started construction at the temporary building site, and a grand opening is scheduled for March 1.
The savings from the lower lease expense are slated to go into a library fund to pay for a new permanent library building and the cost of new books and furniture, McClintock said.
