The Kimball High girls water polo team’s finish in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II semifinals earned the Jaguars more than a few all-league selections.

Kimball senior Jhacky Romero was selected Monday, Nov. 18, as an all-SJS Division II first-team player.

Romero had already been named to the all-Valley Oak League first-team and found out about the section-level award when her coach, Matt Gumpert, sent her a text message after the all-section meeting in Lodi on Monday afternoon.

“I didn’t expect to get it at all,” Romero said. “I figured I had a chance to be a nominee.”

Romero’s four years with the Kimball program, including two as a varsity player on a team that made playoffs twice and advanced to this year’s SJS Division II semifinals, gained her and the Kimball program respect in the section.

Romero said she just enjoys being with a team that is driven to succeed.

“It’s been really fun, and we’ve gotten more competitive as the years went by, and that made it more intense,” she said. “It made me want to put all that I had into it and made me want to practice more, put more dedication into it.”

Also gaining all-section honors were junior Courtney Moberg, second team and also an all-VOL first team selection, and junior Tahnee Trew, honorable mention and all-VOL second team selection.

Moberg said she’s happy to be recognized for the success that got the team to playoffs.

“We came closer as a team, and that really helped our playing,” she said.

Trew added that each level of recognition is an honor.

“Even making it to playoffs is a big deal,” she said. “It was a reflection of how hard we actually do work.”
