Hundreds of dedicated volunteers come together, in factory-like shifts, to make things run smoothly and on deadline. The finale is distribution day, when all the food baskets and toys are delivered to the residents in need.
One year, my church adopted a family through the Brighter Christmas program. Early one morning, when we made our delivery, we were greeted on the front porch by a mom getting ready for work. When she saw us and the boxes we were carrying, she instantly broke down in tears. She asked us in and called her children over. I must admit, I felt my own tears form as I saw the intense joy on their faces. At that moment, all the holiday glitz faded away and was replaced by something almost indescribable — the real meaning of the joy of giving.
This Friday, Nov. 8, and Saturday, Nov. 9, the Brighter Christmas organization will take applications from families in need from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Tracy Community Center, 400 E. 10th St. For details, see Datebook on Page 2.
