Win at Stagg strengthens West’s standing in TCAL

The West High Wolf Pack finished the first half of the Tri-City Athletic League girls tennis season in second place behind St. Mary’s High with a 5-4 win Tuesday, Oct. 8, at Stagg High in Stockton.

West (7-2, 4-1 TCAL) won four of the six singles matches. Sophomore Hanna Nakahara and senior Simran Randhawa both blanked their opponents 6-0, 6-0, senior Russell Jorda won 6-2, 6-4, and senior Deanna Vongphachanh won 6-1, 6-2.

The Wolf Pack clinched the team match with a win at No. 3 doubles as junior Karla Sasing and senior Rosa Borrayo won 6-2, 6-1.

West also had a decisive 9-0 victory on Oct. 3 at Edison High in Stockton, winning every match in straight sets.

Kimball 9, Sonora 0

The Kimball High girls tennis team (7-4 Valley Oak League) swept Sonora on Tuesday at home.

Kimball won all of the singles matches in straight sets as juniors Kylie Moxley and Viel Salgarino and seniors Aly Bangayan and Ysabel Candalla each gave up just one game in two sets.

Also winning all but one game were two doubles teams, freshman Tarini Mudunuri with senior Angela Egbuchulam and senior Gigi Vega with junior Rachel Hall.

The sweep followed a 7-2 defeat at Manteca High on Monday, Oct. 7. Kimball junior Kylie Moxley won the No. 1 singles match 6-1, 6-2, but Manteca won the other five singles matches and two of the three doubles matches in straight sets. Kimball junior Rachel Hall and sophomore Maca Cortina won their doubles match 5-7, 7-6, 10-4.

Tracy 8, Franklin 1

The Tracy girls tennis team took a step forward in San Joaquin Athletic Association competition on Oct. 3 with an victory at Franklin High in Stockton.

Tracy swept the singles. Freshman Melanie Markovic won 6-1, 6-0, senior Maisy Green won 6-0, 6-4, sophomore Sarah Kellogg won 6-3, 6-1, sophomore Marissa Anderson won 6-2, 6-2, senior Taylor Hurlock won 6-4, 6-1, and senior Lindsey Ewen won 6-1, 6-1.

In doubles competition, Tracy seniors Xenia Ceja and Danielle Gallegos won 6-1, 6-3, and juniors Kayla Swift and Brady Victoria won 7-6, 4-6, 17-15.
