The Kimball girls tennis team finished the first half of the Valley Oak League season with a 6-3 win at Sierra High on Tuesday, Sept. 24.
The Jaguars (5-2) won four of the six singles matches, including junior Viel Salgarino’s close win, 7-5, 7-5, over Sierra’s Annie Banks. Also winning for Kimball in the singles were senior Ysabel Candalla 6-4, 1-6, 6-3, senior Angela Egbuchulam 7-5, 6-2, and junior Lisa Bourgeois 6-1, 6-3.
Kimball also won two of the three doubles matches. Freshman Tarini Mudunuri and junior Rachel Hall won 6-2, 6-4, and senior Angelique Vega and sophomore Macarena Cortina Petrasic won 7-5, 6-0.
The win follows the Jaguars’ 7-2 loss at home to Manteca on Sept. 19. Kimball junior Kylie Moxley beat Manteca’s Liz Diaz 6-2, 7-5, and junior Lisa Bourgeois beat Allison Rachels 6-2, 6-3.
West 7, McNair 2
The West girls tennis team started its Tri-City Athletic League season on Tuesday, Sept. 24, with a 7-2 win at McNair High in Stockton.
West (4-1) won five of the six singles matches. Senior Russell Jorda won her match 7-5, 8-6, sophomore Allysa Febre won 6-0, 7-6 (10-8), sophomore Hanna Nakahara won 6-0, 6-0, senior Deanna Vongphachanh won 6-1, 6-3 and Shaunna Gaynor-Flynn won 6-3, 6-1
In the doubles, seniors Simran Randhawa and Rosa Borrayo won their match 6-3, 6-3, and junior Karla Sasing and freshman Zaria Ealy won their match 6-4, 6-4.
Lincoln 5, Tracy 4
Tracy’s tennis team won the top singles matches but still took a close loss to San Joaquin Athletic Association leader Lincoln on Tuesday, Sept. 24, at Lincoln High in Stockton.
Tracy freshman Melanie Markovic won the No. 1 singles match with a shut out of Victoria Chesley 6-0, 6-0. Also winning for Tracy (3-2, 2-1 SJAA) in the singles were junior Camille McDaniel 6-4, 6-2, senior Maisy Green 6-2, 6-1, and senior Taylor Hurlock 4-6, 6-2, 10-6. Lincoln (3-0 SJAA) won two singles matches and all three doubles matches, all in straight sets.
It was the second loss in a row for Tracy, which also fell 8-1 at home to the Lodi Flames on Sept. 19. Tracy’s win came in the No. 6 singles, with senior Taylor Hurlock winning the No. 6 singles match 6-2, 6-3.
