Kimball High senior Francesca Loayza was the overall winner of the varsity girls 5K run at the Sierra High Invitational cross-country meet on Saturday, Sept. 14, at Tuolumne Regional Park in Modesto.
Loayza, the only member of the Jaguar varsity girls team competing Saturday, ran the course in 20 minutes 14 seconds.
The Kimball varsity boys squad placed third out of nine teams at the event with a score of 87, behind first-place Turlock (49) and second-place Madera (69).
Junior Fernando Carrasco was the Jaguars’ lead runner, placing eighth overall (18:34) and freshman Nathan Perez right behind in ninth place (18:37). Also contributing to the team score were seniors Eduardo Calderon (19:07), Giovanni Miranda (19:55) and Roger Gomez (20:02)
West and Tokay at Stagg
West High’s varsity girls cross-country team claimed a win by forfeit over Stagg High on Thursday, Sept. 12, at Stagg, but the girls were outrun by Tokay for a score of 45-17.
Julia Flohr was the leading runner for the West girls, finishing the 5K course with a time of 24 minutes, 4 seconds, to take first place against Stagg and fourth against Tokay.
West’s other top varsity girls included senior Julie Schobey (25:39) and juniors Effie Nehoran (27:39), Cassandra Vik (29:17), Alondra Alvarez (29:57) and Justyce Romo (31:01).
The varsity boys lost two close team matches, 27-30 to Stagg and 24-31 to Tokay. Leading runner for the Wolf Pack was freshman Zayed Zaman (19:47), who finished third against Tokay and fourth against Stagg. West’s team also includes senior Huruy Zeratsion (19:53), junior Yuyavan Robles (20:31) and sophomores Simon Franco (20:49) and Chad Hoyt (21:09)
Tracy at Bear Creek
The Bulldogs took a close win over Bear Creek in the varsity girls division and a loss the boys division in their first San Joaquin Athletic Association match of 2013 on Thursday, Sept. 12, at Oak Grove Park in Stockton.
Tracy High junior Kaitlin Spencer’s first-place time of 20 minutes, 16 seconds on the 5K course led the Bulldogs to a 25-34 win over Bear Creek. Senior Ellie Fisher placed third, and the Bulldogs top runners also included seniors Brenda Lopez (24:55), and Ruth Alvarez (25:26) and junior Fanny Lopez (25:44)
Bear Creek’s boys beatTracy26-29. Junior Evan Savage led the Bulldogs with a second-place time of 17:22. Also contributing toTracy’s score were seniors Alfonso Gonzalez (17:38), Chris Garcia (18:18) and Andrew Canlas (18:48) and junior Blake Lazar (19:35)
Hurlock wins at Sias Invite
Blair Hurlock of Tracy, a senior at De La Salle High School in Concord, won the 2-mile race at the Ed Sias Invitational cross country meet at Hidden Valley Park in Martinez, Saturday, Sept. 14. Hurlock’s first place time of 9 minutes, 42 seconds, is a new course record and led the De La Salle varsity boys team to a first-place finish with a score of 36.
