Cefalo said he signed a lease in early June for the 5,000-square-foot storefront at 45 W. 10th St., the former site of the Lighting Gallery and Home Décor.
Main Street Music opened 20 years ago at 53 W. 10 St.
The reason for the move, he said, is to expand the music instruction area from 11 studios to 14, with a waiting room and two larger studios for group lessons. He said the extra room will allow him to provide more options for students.
“I had been looking at that building a long time, probably 10 years,” he said, sitting inside his store office on Aug. 28. “I’ve wanted it for years.”
Cefalo said he liked the storefront — vacant since the Lighting Gallery closed in November 2011 — because it gave him room to grow.
“It’s 1,500 square feet larger than here,” he said. “I’ve been here 20 years in this space, and it’s a great space, but I wanted a bigger space.”
He said he signed a 12-year lease with a 12-year option, and renovations to the new location are expected to begin “soon.”
“I’m really excited, nervous and excited,” Cefalo said. “The whole store will be student focused. I’m here for the kids — that’s why our motto is ‘Where students come first.’”
Jeff Linsangan, who was waiting for his 10-year-old daughter, Jazmine, to complete a flute lesson on Friday, Aug. 30, thought the move would be a benefit.
“They definitely need more updated space, and it will enhance the community as a whole,” Linsangan said. “It will be more spacious.”
Instructor Tom Renner said he was excited about the new location.
“I think it’s fantastic,” Renner said. “We have a top-notch group of teachers and a professional program. It’s better for everybody.”
Main Street Music offers lessons in a variety of instruments, including guitar, piano, flute and percussion. The store also sells instruments and music books for various styles.
Cefalo, who hopes to open at 45 W. 10th St. by next spring, is planning to keep his original shop open until the new store is operational. He said his deadline is May 31.
