School administrators and student-members of the link crew and leadership rolled out a red carpet and greeted their peers with cheers and open arms.
The red carpet entrance left a good impression on senior London Seals. The 17-year-old recently moved from Oakland to Tracy and is starting her first year at West.
“I’m energized and ready to learn,” she said. “I’m ready to get this school year started.”
Principal Troy Brown was joined by four assistant principals in shaking the hand of every student to enter the school.
"We want these kids to enjoy coming to school," Brown said. "We go out there and shake hands with the students so they've started their day out already making one connection."
Down the street, Monte Vista Middle School principal, Susan O’Hara-Jones, and her faculty were sporting colorful “WEB” T-shirts all day.
Monte Vista’s WEB (Where Everyone Belongs) program is designed to help sixth-graders transition into middle school. About 80 eighth-graders were selected as WEB leaders this year to welcome the lowerclassmen on the first day of school and lead them through activities during the year.
“We wanted to do something where they really felt like they were apart of Monte Vista from the first day,” O’Hara-Jones said.
At Central Elementary School, kindergarten teacher Stacey Arnaudo was excited to be back in the classroom. The 29-year-old was previously laid off by the Tracy Unified School District, but was rehired this year to her old position.
“Walking down the halls to my classroom again was refreshing,” she said. “It felt great.”
Her students seemed equally excited to return to class.
“We had an excellent morning — great listeners,” Arnaudo said. “They are a bunch of sponges ready to learn.”
Norma Nunez, 38, encouraged her second-grade class during a math exercise.
“You guys are great listeners,” she said. “Boys and girls this is an awesome way to start off the school year.”
Osman Ibarra said he was excited about “having a new teacher.”
“She’s nice,” Osman said.
