Gregory Bailey, a 2009 graduate of West High School, was driving east in a 1999 Buick Regal around 11 p.m. when he allegedly crossed the double yellow line of the two-lane roadway and went into oncoming traffic, according to Steve Creel, spokesman for the California Highway Patrol Dublin office.
Bailey struck a tractor-trailer, which was carrying garbage to a local landfill just east of Dyer Road, Creel said on Tuesday, July 16.
Dyer Road is about 7 miles from Grant Line Road, according to Google maps.
According to the highway patrol, the crash killed Bailey and injuried the tractor-trailer driver.
“The impact caused fatal injuries to the driver of the car (Bailey) and minor injuries to the big rig driver,” he said.
The truck driver, who was believed to be traveling at the posted speed limit of 45 mph, was taken to a hospital with unknown injuries.
Emergency responders needed more than an hour to free Bailey from his car, Creel said. He was declared dead at the scene.
Investigators believe Bailey was traveling more than 90 mph at the time of crash. Creel said they are still trying to determine why he crossed into the westbound lane.
Officers are interviewing witnesses, Creel said.
At the time of his death, Gregory Bailey was living in Tracy with his parents, Jamie and Steven Bailey.
Jamie Bailey said her son, always known to have a smile on his face, “loved life.”
Bailey played numerous sports as a teenager in high school and enjoyed snowboarding as an adult.
As a member of a close family, Bailey spent time with his two older brothers, Gabriel and Gerrod, and enjoyed taking pictures of himself, relatives and friends, according to his mother.
Bailey graduated from the College of Southern Idaho in 2012 and worked as an events planner for Levy Restaurants at the Oracle Arena during the America’s Cup races in San Francisco.
A memorial service begins at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 20, at Fry Memorial Chapel, 550 S. Central Ave. A celebration of life will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Tracy Elks Lodge, 6400 11th St.
