Angelo Alex Abila, 19, is charged with premeditated attempted murder, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, intentional and personal discharge of a firearm, infliction of great bodily injury, and assault with a firearm on a person.
Abila appeared in San Joaquin County Superior Court and had his criminal complaint amended to include charges of being an active participant in a street gang and shooting at an occupied dwelling and gang enhancements, according to Deputy District Attorney Donald Vaughn.
“We received a lot more discovery (evidence) making this a gang case,” he said.
The hearing was continued for further arraignment to 8:30 a.m. on July 29 in the Manteca courthouse.
After the hearing, Defense Attorney John Casenave said he wasn’t surprised the enhancements were added. He had heard rumors in the past that prosecutors had tried to link Abila to a criminal street gang.
According to police, Abila allegedly shot Nikki Mello, 17, outside of her house on the 2800 block of Redbridge Road during a party around 2:55 a.m. on March 16.
She was shot once in the back and the bullet reportedly remains lodged in her left lung.
Abila remains at San Joaquin County Jail without bail.
