Last week’s Remember When mystery photo showed the Hagstrom’s supermarket building in the mid-1950s. The building on West 10th Street, just west of B Street, was completed in 1952, when Oakland-based Hagstrom’s moved from Adam Street to the new building.
The building, which has been remodeled, is now the downtown branch of Bank of America. The Hagstrom’s group of food stores, once a major player among East Bay markets, is no longer in business.
Identifying Hagstrom’s were Sue Schnabel, Pete Mitracos, Eleanor Ramos, Christine Fairbanks and Sharon Kuderca. Bill Miller recalls working as a clerk at Hagstrom’s for two years, 1955 to 1957, when he first came to Tracy.
Bob Covington was the manager, Andy Reto was produce manager and Butch Jensen — a onetime Tracy mayor — was meat department manager. Other clerks were Bill Fox, Virgil Elems, Ray Coykendall, Bob Mehring, Helen Azbill, Helen Reueler and Elsie Sequeira.
