Track and field athletes from local high school finished just short of qualifying for the California Interscholastic Federation state championship at the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters meet May 24 and 25 at Elk Grove High School.

The section sent the top three athletes in each event to the CIF meet Friday, May 31, and Saturday, June 1, in Clovis.

Discus thrower Jalayah Douglass, a Kimball High senior, came the closest with a fourth place finish. She launched the discus 123 feet, 4 inches on her first throw Friday, May 25, but was unable to improve on her initial mark and finished 1 inch shy of the third-place qualifier.

Also placing fourth at the section meet was West High senior Ernest Turner, whose mark of 46-2 in the triple jump was 4.5 inches behind the third-place qualifier.

Three local runners competed in the championship heats of their respective track events. Kimball High senior Derek Van de Streek placed fifth in the boys 400 (49.20), Tracy High sophomore Nate Jones placed fifth in the boys 100 (11.18) and West High senior Eddie Kaye was eighth in the boys 200 (23.73).
