MANTECA — A not-guilty plea was entered Monday, May 20, by a Lathrop teen accused of shooting a teenage girl at a party March 16.

Angelo Alex Abila, 19, is charged with premeditated attempted murder, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, intentional and personal discharge of a firearm, infliction of great bodily injury, and assault with a firearm on a person.

Abila entered the plea during a hearing for further arraignment in San Joaquin County Superior Court.

Judge Ron Northup accepted a request by Abila’s attorney, John Casenave, to set a preliminary hearing for 8:30 a.m. on June 20 in the Manteca courthouse.

Deputy District Attorney Donald Vaughn told the court that he planned to call five witnesses and that it should take one day to complete his arguments.

According to Tracy police, Abila allegedly shot 17-year-old Nikki Mello during a party at the girls’ house on the 2800 block of Redbridge Road.

The girl was struck once in the back, and the bullet remains lodged in her left lung, according to her mother.

Abila is in San Joaquin County Jail without bail.
