The phones are available through the California Telephone Access Program sponsored by the California Public Utilities Commission.
Field operations representative Vanessa Rangel displayed the phones recently during a veterans-service clinic sponsored by the Veterans Administration in the American Legion Hall, 1960 N. Tracy Blvd.
A number of veterans received one of the models that come with standard options such as amplified volume, big buttons, a flashing light to signal incoming calls and captioned calls that can be read.
Phones are also available for individuals who have restricted mobility and speech, sight and hearing impairments.
Veterans who received one of the phones at the clinic had filled out an application form that was signed by a doctor or other health-care professional.
Rangel said that although the free telephones are being offered to veterans at VA clinics, the program is available to anyone with special needs.
