Angelo Alex Abila, 19, is charged with attempted murder, intentional and personal discharge of a firearm, assault with a firearm on a person and two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. He also faces an enhancement of inflicting great bodily injury.
According to Tracy police, Abila allegedly shot 17-year-old Nikki Mello the evening of March 16 during a party at the girl’s house on the 2800 block of Redbridge Road.
The girl was struck once in the back, and the bullet remains lodged in her left lung.
Judge Ron Northup appointed attorney John Casenave to represent Abila until his next hearing at 8:30 a.m. May 10.
According to prosecutor Donald Vaughn, Abila told the court he was in the process of hiring his own attorney.
Vaughn called the case a “very serious crime” and said Abila could face life in prison if found guilty.
Abila is being held at San Joaquin County Jail without bail.
