Chun beat Manteca High’s Mike Lopez on Thursday, April 25, in the VOL championship match at East Union High in Manteca. Chun said the 6-2, 6-1 score of the final doesn’t reflect how hard he had to play to beat Lopez, with each point won only after extended rallies.
“It was pretty competitive. He was very consistent and solid all-around,” Chun said. “I don’t think there was one game won at 40-love.”
Chun will now move on to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II individual tournament on Thursday, May 2, at Johnson Ranch Racquet Club in Roseville.
“I just need to keep practicing to get better and go out and play my best. I have high expectations.”
While the Jaguars had hoped for a Kimball vs. Kimball match in the VOL final, junior Logan Staggs, the team’s No. 1 singles player, did not play because of an ankle injury. Coach Danette McDaniel said she hasn’t heard yet if Staggs will be ready for next week’s team playoffs.
Kimball (17-0, 14-0 VOL) got a bye for the first round of the playoffs, and will begin the Division II team tournament at 3:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 30, at Kimball High, against either Patterson or Whitney.
