He said officers were “very surprised,” as the St. Patrick’s Day holiday often involves heavy consumption of alcohol.
“We were surprised and glad people were obeying the laws and having a designated driver,” he said. “I saw a couple of those.”
The checkpoint was manned by six officers and a sergeant, who screened 718 vehicles between 2 and 10 p.m., Martinho said.
Three vehicles were pulled out of the checkpoint line, but field sobriety tests showed those drivers had blood-alcohol levels within the legal limit of 0.08 percent.
The next DUI checkpoint in the Tracy area is tentatively scheduled for early May, he said.
