Matt Loggins’ busy schedule just got busier.

The 39-year-old is getting started right away at his new job as Kimball High’s varsity football coach, but until the end of the school year, he plans to conduct business as usual as West High’s athletic director and physical education teacher.

The Tracy Unified School District Board of Trustees confirmed Loggins as head coach of the Jaguars football program with a 5-0 vote Tuesday, March 12.

Trustees Jill Costa and Greg Crandall were absent.

Loggins replaces former Jaguars football coach Steve Anastasio, who was not reinstated in late January when the district declined to renew his coaching contract.

On Wednesday, March 13, Loggins said that he will help West High oversee a smooth transition.

“Nothing changes as far as my teaching assignment for the rest of the school year,” he said. “I’m hoping I can be teaching at Kimball full-time in the fall, but that hasn’t been guaranteed to me yet.”

Loggins added that, come fall, it would be tough to coach football at one school and lead the athletic department at another.

“My thought is I’ll finish the year and help break in whoever they hire,” Loggins said. “Whatever I can do to help that person, I want to leave West in the best position possible.”

West interim Principal Troy Brown said the district will now advertise the job opening for West’s football coach. A committee of school staff and administrators will interview applicants and make a recommendation to the district board of trustees.

Brown wouldn’t speculate on who would apply for the job.

“I’m guessing by the end of this week or next week we’ll have a better idea as we open up his position,” Brown said.

The teams go through these changes as they prepare to begin football practice in early May.

Loggins said that after he meets with Kimball’s returning players on Monday he will begin to assemble his staff.

“One good thing I did at West was assemble a pretty good staff of men and they’re all good coaches,” he said. “Some may have opportunities at West.”

Kimball High athletic director Steve Thornton said that the district will also form a committee to interview those coaches before they are hired at Kimball. Coaches now at Kimball could apply, and the school could see some new faces as well.

“We’ve got to be fair to everyone who applies,” Thornton said. “Everyone will have to go through the interview process the district sets up.”
