Principal Jason Noll said that the new carpeting of synthetic turf and bleachers makes a much different impression than the rest of the constant construction on the 11th Street campus.
“For six years we’ve had construction so it’s nothing different, but it’s exciting now,” Noll said last week after the latest phase started to take shape. “(Teachers and students) see the bleachers and it’s like, ‘Wow!’ For so long it was the dirt field, so they’re very excited.”
Last week a crew from Pro Spectra Contract Flooring of San Diego laid down the plastic foam base and synthetic grass that will make up the new football and soccer field, and this week they sewed in the yard lines, hash marks and big ‘T” at the 50-yard line.
Construction manager Anthony Continente of RGM and Associates, TUSD’s engineering consultant, said that all of the letters and artwork are pre-cut pieces of colored turf. Workers trim out the background from the existing turf and use a large sewing machine on wheels to stitch the pieces into place.
The entire project is expected to be complete by June 10.
