It will be a wet and wild Memorial Day weekend at Tracy High as the Tracy Tritons host the Oakdale Gators, Manteca Dolphins, Hughson Sea Dogs, Ceres Dolphins and Ripon Sea Lions of the Mid-Valley Swim League for the 38th annual Tracy Invitational.

Beginning today at 9 a.m. and stretching through Sunday, 535 boys and girls from age categories of under-6 to 18 will compete in the league’s first meet of the season.

Tritons president Jenn Loggins said parents enroll their children in the Tracy swim team for “the experience of being on a competitive and recreational team. It’s a great individual and team sport.”

Loggins added that the Triton team gives young swimmers “the opportunity to compete at an athletic level and learn valuable life skills. By learning how to swim, the kids learn water safety skills.”

Some of the most notable races this weekend are the individual freestyle and distance events.

The distance races are broken up into two categories: single and double, while the length varies by age. For boys and girls 6 through 8 years old, the single distance is 25 yards and the double distance is 50 yards. Boys and girls 9 through 18 swim 50 yards for the single distance and 100 yards for the double distance.
