The West High boys basketball team played three close games during the Fairfield Tournament, losing to tournament champ Elk Grove by four and Turlock by five Dec. 28 and 29. On Dec. 30, the Wolf Pack (9-5) finally got on the winning side of one, besting Pleasant Grove, 77-76.

At one point down by 13 points, the Wolf Pack completed the comeback thanks to senior forward Justin Phillips, who hit a game-winning field goal with 1.9 seconds left. He scored 18 points on the night.

Guard Aaron Gori hit six 3-pointers en route to a game-high 20 points, but none were so important as his three in the fourth quarter. The senior’s shots whittled away Pleasant Grove’s 11-point lead entering the fourth quarter, and gave West vital momentum.

Frank Bonifacio added 17 points off the bench, including a nine-point outburst in the second quarter to help keep West within striking distance.

The Wolf Pack scored 29 points in the fourth quarter, its best outburst since a 29-point first quarter against Beyer on Dec. 15.

Today, West will host Bear Creek at 7 p.m. in non-league action.
