EDITOR,

As federal field organizer for Environment California, I’m glad to see that clean energy was a big topic in last week’s Tracy Press Candidates Forum. There is an opportunity to change the future of our country’s energy policy, but we’ll need our leaders in Washington, D.C., to step up to the plate. California has just passed groundbreaking legislation to curb global warming and make the state a world leader in solar power, and it’s time for the same leadership on a national scale.

With war raging in the Middle East, unstable oil and gas prices, and global warming threatening our future, we need to start now. But real change will only come when our elected officials act to put our country on a new energy path.

This fall, we hope that 11th Congressional District candidates Rep. Richard Pombo and Jerry McNerney will join Environment California in delivering on this promise of new energy future, if elected, by agreeing to support policies to save oil; harness energy from clean, renewable and homegrown sources; help Americans save energy; invest in new technologies to power our economy; and make America the world’s clean-energy leader.

Moira Chapin, San Francisco
